OC percentage isn’t the whole story
Most pepper sprays advertise an “OC percentage” — the amount of oleoresin capsicum (the pepper-derived compound) in the formula, usually somewhere between 2% and 20%. It’s tempting to assume a higher percentage automatically means a stronger spray, but that’s not quite right. OC percentage tells you how much pepper extract is in the can, not how potent that extract actually is. Two sprays with the same OC percentage can have very different real-world effects depending on the quality of the oleoresin used.
Scoville Heat Units can be misleading too
You’ll also see Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) ratings used to market pepper spray strength — sometimes in the millions. The catch is that SHU numbers usually describe the heat of the raw pepper before it’s diluted into a spray formula. Once that pepper is mixed into the actual product you’re buying, the effective heat can be considerably lower than the headline number suggests.
What actually matters: Major Capsaicinoids (MC)
The metric that most directly reflects real-world strength is the Major Capsaicinoid (MC) rating, which measures the concentration of the specific compounds that cause the burning, incapacitating effect. It’s a more direct measurement of potency than OC percentage or SHU claims. For context, sprays formulated to deter bears — which need to be effective against a much larger, more resilient target — typically sit around a 1–2% MC rating, which gives you a useful benchmark when comparing human self-defense sprays.
Other things worth considering
Spray pattern: Stream sprays are more precise and less affected by wind, but require better aim. Fogger/cone patterns cover a wider area, which helps if your aim isn’t perfect, but can drift back toward you in windy conditions.
Size and carry method: Keychain-sized canisters are easy to have on hand but hold less product; larger canisters last through more uses.
Expiration: Pepper spray degrades over time and loses effectiveness. Check the expiration date and plan to replace it, typically every 2–4 years depending on the manufacturer.
UV dye: Many formulas include a UV marking dye that helps identify an attacker later if law enforcement gets involved.
Bottom line
Don’t just shop by the biggest percentage or the scariest-sounding heat rating on the label. Look for products from established manufacturers that are transparent about their MC rating, pick a spray pattern that matches how confident you are in your aim, and replace your canister before it expires.
